Our Founding Constitution
We are building a living, breathing global network. A democratic nucleus of thinkers who want to expose the mechanisms that compromise our civic intelligence: to think clearly, and think freely. We believe this is the fundament of a democratic life force.
Through conversations with ideas and people, we aim to equip citizens and decision-makers with the knowledge and tools to defend and strengthen our civic intelligence, open democracy, and shared humanity.
In Greek, “kritikos” translates to “discerning”. We believe the ability to discern—to comprehend, perceive, and evaluate the world with clarity—forms the foundation for a healthy democracy.
If you’re seeking simple answers, this may not be the place for you. Our network is committed to reveal the obscured, concealed, distorted, and entangled to make sense of our absurd times.
Kritikos strives to contribute to a democratic infrastructure that values and centralises intellectual curiosity. We strive for a collective intelligence that is engaged, generative, expansive, transformative, and honest.
We believe this is paramount for building a democratic infrastructure that is resilient, humane, and responsive. A living, breathing nucleus that is adaptive and responsive to the inevitable changes and transformations to come.
The right to seek truth is a fundamental freedom, a cornerstone of democracy that encourages individuals to pursue knowledge and understanding.
Freedom, in this context, is the ability to discern and evaluate the world around us. When this freedom is suppressed or simply overlooked, democracy loses its essential promise.
However, freedom also encompasses the right to choose not to discern, to perceive reality in simplified, abstracted forms, and to apply neat conclusions to a messy world.
While this too is a form of freedom, a flourishing society requires a more expansive, curious, and engaged intellectual freedom—one that is critical of its own thinking and aligned with the public will.
Kritikos advocates for an intellectual freedom that exists at the intersection of institutional power and individual agency.
This demands institutions and frameworks of governance that prioritise critical thinking and clear perception, along with a personal commitment to confronting everyday complexities and uncertainties.
Intellectual freedom is about both content (what is visible and what is hidden) and process (the methods by which we comprehend that content).
Today, both are under threat.
Media literacy
In an era dominated by AI-driven media, the lines between reality and fiction are increasingly blurred. AI-generated content and sophisticated algorithms cater to human gullibility, presenting rational and logical "thought" that often masks the absence of genuine understanding. These technologies exploit our cognitive biases, making it easier to manipulate public opinion and spread misinformation.
Kritikos aims to equip individuals with the resources to discern authentic information from AI-generated content, not by using another AI tool to establish this fact, but by strengthening their own faculty of discernment.
Mainstream newsrooms are increasingly seen as instruments of the state, where narratives seek data to support predetermined agendas rather than allowing data to reveal authentic narratives. This manipulation of information undermines public trust and hinders the pursuit of truth.
Kritikos challenges this status quo by encouraging independent journalism. We strive to create an environment where data-driven narratives are valued and the public is empowered to question and evaluate the information they consume.
Traditional journalism is being overshadowed by influencers who shape public opinion through social media platforms. While influencers can provide valuable insights and perspectives, they often lack the ethical standards of professional journalism.
Kritikos seeks to bridge this gap by promoting critical individual assessment of the consumption and nature of information. We advocate for a media landscape where influencers and journalists alike are held to high standards of integrity, transparency, and accuracy.
Intellectual Freedom
A flourishing society is free from control, repression, and manipulation. Where individuals possess the tools and resources to make decisions that encourage connection, resilience, and wisdom.
For society to thrive, practical wisdom must guide what is good and virtuous. Our focus on practical wisdom has waned.
The media prioritises stories over reason, politics offers narrow solutions that miss the core of our problems, and knowledge-producing institutions have forgotten the meaning of culture, the arts, and philosophy, opting instead for market-driven curricula that rush students through complex issues and thought processes.
Intellectual freedom must be embedded across all facets of society to counter deeply entrenched, manipulative, and short-sided forces.
We cannot solely rely on political leadership or corporate accountability to prepare us for our changing future. We need a critical mass more than ever. A civic intelligence that challenges power through the practice of discernment, who can differentiate between true and false, articulate and think through their own biases, and arrive at conclusions that are compassionate, honest, and attainable.
This demands muscle, skill, and dedication. And may well be the most significant investment we should make to preserve the best of human and social life.
Our Method
Publications
Kritikos emphasises the importance of discernment in understanding the issues that shape our world.
Each piece is reviewed by a member of our network to ensure clear thinking, emotional transparency, and reasonable conclusions (see our review model here). Reviewers assess a minimum level of discernment; not opinions, views, or theoretical arguments.
We value differing opinions and encourage collaboration between diverse perspectives to uphold a high standard of discernment. As long as conclusions adhere to a minimum standard of discernment, there is no editorial interference.
Our rationale to create a civic democratic intelligence means we are not an ideological platform. Democracy for us is the equivalence to appreciating individual contributions to collective life. We share a commitment to the human faculty of discernment, regardless of ideological and political fervour.
Contributors
Our contributors are Authors, Editors, and Members. Authors share their knowledge in the form of essays, reflections, and conversations, published through our Substack channel. Authors can publish with us once or often.
Editors apply their knowledge to review author pitches and full drafts. Editors work closely with our Advisors.
Authors and editors can choose to become KI members. Members have a more active voice in the strategic direction of each Issue Area—what research and work we commission, who we engage with, and the scope and direction of the conversation.

Transformative Dialogue
Our method and publications are aimed at building and sustaining a conversation. We believe the best form of conversation is generative, expansive, and transformative. Each publication acts as a “neuron” within this wider conversation. As a network, our collective intent is to contribute to the conversation. In our individual writing, we engage with other ideas and arguments with a shared commitment to further the conversation. Where we reach a stalemate, we look deeper and engage wider. We don’t accept an impasse as a conclusion.
Join Us
If we want to build a better, more resilient and connected society, we need a cross-section of society to contribute to the conversation.
Together, we can navigate the complexities of our age and strive for a civic intelligence that is reasoned, engaged, critical, and independent.
Join our network of discerning individuals who question, explore, and challenge anti-democratic mechanisms, ultimately making sense of our chaotic times and keeping humanity at the forefront at all times.
